The Sound of Gnarly Air Vibrations
Well, well, well! Long time no see! Oh, wait, lemme just--
*Plays a chord on the piano*
Aaaaanyways...
Music! Y'ever just pop on Spotify or Soundcloud or what-have-you and just... put on a banger? I know I did. It's weird how these otherwise irregular sounds have just forced themselves into all of our cultures via different arrangements of tones, pitches, etc... it's all just noise in the end, though, isn't it? We're a phonetic species. Some guy can just stroll up with a funny-looking sound implement, go "Beep, beep. Beep-beep, boop, boop." and we'd all gladly listen. But really, what's the deal with music? It's an art, yeah, but it's just... so weird, compared to everything else. It's just as subjective, if not even more than writing and painting, but it's also so hard to get into. Speaking from experience here (learning piano), learning how to play music is kinda like being accepted into some sorta extremely small group of people with the job of bringing a highly needed resource to the masses. Musical instruments are the tools of our trade, and music sheets are the secret language we use. And yet, with how rigid music theory can be, it's also so expansive. I mean, think of all the different genres that exist in the world! It's absolutely staggering.
...I know I just said that music theory is rigid, but we're already getting songs that break away from the norms. Honestly, if I were to just give a guess about it, I'd say that probably Splatoon would be to blame for kickstarting the whole "I can't understand a thing and I like it" bandwagon of songs. It's a melange of different genres, carelessly mutilated together into a masterful OST meant to get you moving. I know, it's not the first one, but it's probably the most famous example. And what's the end result? A dozen different "-core" genres that don't place certain musical notions on a pedestal, but rather, they pick a theme, and just go with it. Some of you may know and love these genres; I know I do. And for those who don't... find a young person to explain it to you the best they can. I already did my fair share.
Anyways, finally, I wanted to chip into the whole great song discussion by mentioning a personal favorite of mine...
"You're safe here within the library. Please, enjoy my company as much as you can."
That's the quote I think of whenever I hear this song. It carries multiple meanings for me, but in general, it feels homely. Welcoming. Safe. When this is on, I know it'll be alright, no matter what disaster may be looming on the horizon.
Cheers, and rock on.
It's time for band practice over in the Discord garage. You coming?
You know about Lo-fi music? Well, apparently there's a thing called Ko-fi music as well!
